Prototype Investment Castings
Since 1989, Shellcast Foundries Inc. (Montreal, Canada) has developed a unique derivation of the
conventional lost wax investment casting process. New casting designs can
be introduced with castings manufactured within a short time-frame.
Utilizing solid and quick cast resin models produced by the following
process: Stereolithography (3D), Solider
(Cubital), and Stereos (EOS), Selective Laser Sintering (DTM), and Laminated Object Manufacturing
(Helisys), Shellcast has the proven technical ability to directly convert
the different patterns into castings.
The resin model is used directly as an expendable pattern and is ultimately burned rather than
melted away, as is done with the wax pattern.
ADVANTAGES OF THE SHELLCAST RAPID PROTOTYPE METHOD
- No cost of building tooling.
- No time factor waiting for soft or other tooling to be built.
- Utilize solid and quick cast resin models in the same way as a wax
pattern by converting from resin directly into metal.
- Lead times for prototype castings are typically 3-4 weeks after receipt of resin model.
- Able to work with either supplied resin models or procure this service on behalf of the customer.
- Production of the resin model requires the availability of a
solid CAD file in STL format.
If this is not supplied by the customer, Shellcast is able to work with 2D, 3D or wireframe
as is required.
- Models can be visual tools for fit check verification, tool planning,
assembly methods planning, and customer communication.
- The process is capable of producing intricate parts ranging in size from 1" (25mm) to over 36" (900mm).
- Shellcast is dedicated to staying informed of the latest technology.
As a leader in this field, it can
offer complete prototype services to potential customers.
